McCrory puts more pressure on Duke Energy about coal ash spill

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

In a letter sent to Duke Energy, Gov. Pat McCrory says he expects the company to provide a plan for all of their coal ash facilities.

"We need action with a sense of urgency from Duke Energy," said Governor Pat McCrory as he addressed media about coal ash.

The letter asked for "any options, priorities, alternatives, preliminary designs, cost estimates, or any other pertinent information you possess regarding Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress coal ash ponds."

For weeks all eyes have been on Duke Energy after an estimated 35 million gallons of contaminated water containing coal ash spilled into the Dan River. That's enough to fill 53 Olympic-sized swimming pools.McCrory gave Duke until March 15 to supply that information.

"At Dan River, we have given you a 60-day notice that DENR will reevaluate your permit to discharge to the state's waters. More broadly, we have expressed our primary desire that coal ash ponds be moved away from these essential resources," wrote the Governor.

WNCN asked McCrory if there would be continued push to have the coal ash removed, if Duke does not plan on clearing them out.

"Let me just tell you this," he answered. "We are expecting a very aggressive plan. It's time for them to step up to the plate, show some action. I think they need to get off the sideline and communicate to this Governor and to the public what their plans both short term and long term to reassure the public that our drinking water, our recreational use of the rivers, and the long term sustainable livability of the wildlife and marine life of our rivers is going to be protected while also understanding the energy needs of our state."
