Parkway Christian Academy in Birmingham closing after 35 years

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, AL - A longtime private school in east Birmingham is closing its doors.

The Pastor of Parkway Christian Fellowship Church has confirmed that Parkway Christian Academy will shut down after this school year.

Pastor Randy Williams said tuition paid by parents kept the school operating, however, the church was responsible for other areas, such as the mortgage.
"We knew that if we enrolled next year it would be a disaster."

Williams said the church has reached a point where it can no longer support the school. "It was a very painful decision. We realized we had to make it. We have tried. We've struggled for a few years to keep the school open and we just had to have a mature decision that this is where we are. This is what we have to do," said Williams.

According to the pastor, the church is hoping to sell the property.

Williams said the church is working on an agreement with Cornerstone Schools of Alabama.

If the deal goes through, Cornerstone would buy the Parkway Christian Academy building and reopen as a Cornerstone Institution, according to Williams.

The last day of school for Parkway Christian is May 23, 2014.
