Durham volunteers work to get uninsured signed up for ACA

DURHAM, N.C. -

Volunteers in Durham are making a final push to sign people up for the Affordable Care Act.

Sharon Hirsch went door-to-door Saturday to help those who have not signed up for the ACA.

The deadline for open enrollment is March 31 and those who neglect to sign up could face a penalty.

"I've always been concerned about people who don't have health insurance. It's part of my work and my personal life to know folks who don't have coverage, so helping folks get connected is important," Hirsch said.

Hirsch is one of 60 volunteers with Durham Congregations, Associations and Neighbors letting people know help is available.

Rep. G.K. Butterfield helped kick off the event Saturday.

"We have one and a half million uninsured North Carolinians and we are determined to get each and every one of them insured, particularly those who make more than $11,500 a year. That group can qualify for subsidies," Butterfield said.

Butterfield said he knew educating 48 million people nationwide about the ACA would be difficult but feels great progress that has been made.

Volunteers in Durham are urging people they meet today who don't have health insurance to come to the Lincoln Community Health Center March 8.  People will be at the center to help them navigate through the process of signing up for the Affordable Care Act.

The Lincoln Community Health Center is located at 1301 Fayetteville Street in Durham. The help session will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
