St. Baldrick's head shaving event draws big crowd in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Hundreds went bald Saturday all in the name of children's cancer research all while thousands watched.

A St. Baldrick's head shaving event shut down parts of Glenwood Avenue all afternoon for an experience to change the lives of those involved one buzz at a time.

As the crowd cheered on, nerves started settling in for Raleigh Starbucks Barista, Ashley Chorba.

"My heart is beating fast right now," said Chorba. "It's not fair that their (children's) lives get cut short, so that's why I started looking into it and a day and a half ago started doing this and raised $1,335."

Men, women, young, and old all stepped up to the platform, taking part in a friendly competition to see who could raise the most money.

A young Will Salvatore from Raleigh raised $5,200.

"Last year I only raised $1,000 something. Next year, I want to raise $7,000," Salvatore said.

Hair stylists and barbers also volunteered their time and skills.

"I'm always willing to volunteer," said Tamara Wagner. "This is fun actually. You can rub your hand on it!"

Hibernian along with Napper Tandy's co-hosted the event and at the end of the day they raised more than $280,000.

Last year the St. Baldrick's foundation as a whole raised more than $34 million. This year, even though it's only March, they've already hit over $9 million for Pediatric Cancer Research.
