3 more flu-related deaths confirmed in NC, total at 85

RALEIGH, N.C. -

State health officials say a total of 85 people have died from the flu inNorth Carolina since the flu season began in October 2013.

Three new deaths were reported in the week beginning Feb. 23 and ending March1. The State Department of Health and Human Services says adults ages 25 to 49account for 31 of the deaths, followed by 30 deaths among people ages 50 to 64.

Nineteen people 65 or older have died of the flu. The flu also has killedthree children four and under, including one infant, and two children between theages 5 and 17.

A year ago, 59 people died from flu-related symptoms during the six-monthflu season that runs from early October to mid-May. Adults ages 65 or olderaccounted for 36 of the 59 deaths in 2012-13.
