Duke freshman porn star appears on CNN

Posted: Updated:

The Duke University freshman who stars in pornographic filmsspoke to CNN's Piers Morgan for a Friday broadcast, and addressed how herfamily has responded to news of what she is doing.

The student has not revealed her real name and uses thestage name Belle Knox.

"At the end of the day your family loves you. And it's that lovethat will keep us together," she said. "And I think that any family who woulddisown their daughter for doing pornography, that's pretty questionable ethics.

"My family loved me six months ago when I wasn't a pornstar. What would make them not love me now?"

The student's participation in the porn industry has beenwidely discussed on campus, where the Duke Chronicle first wrote a story aboutit.

In an essay on the xojane.com website, thefreshman  said she only agreed to arecent interview with the Duke Chronicle after a fraternity member saw her inan adult film and realized who she was.

She said the man promised not toreveal the fact that she appeared in pornography but then did anyway.

In an essay posted recently onxojane.com, she pointed to a double standard on campus, where she says she hasfaced threats.

"You want to see me naked,"she wrote. "And then you want to judge me for letting you see menaked."

She did not reveal her actual name, although her photographs would certainly give that away in the Duke community.

"The truth of the matter isthis: I am one identity when I am a student. I'm another when I do porn. And noone controls either -- but me.

"Today, I am choosing to revealmy porn identity to the world.

"My name is Belle Knox, and Iwear my Scarlet Letter with pride."

In the lengthy story with the DukeChronicle, she said she went to Los Angeles when not in school to participatein porn. She said her parents did not realize she did that, and that she did itin part to raise money to pay for the expensive Duke tuition.

Knox told Playboy.com that doing pornwas her "only viable option" to attend Duke.

"The fact that the only viableoptions to pay for college are to take out gigantic student loans, to not go tocollege at all or to join the sex industry really says something," shesaid.

"We need to recognize thatthere's a gap between what middle-class and upper-middle-class families can payand what they're asked to pay. We also need to stop looking at loans as asolution to fix our education system, because they're crippling oureconomy."
