Church holds 1st service since Hurricane Irene

Posted: Updated:
Dozens of people packed Zion Hill United Church of Christ for the first time since Hurricane Irene in 2011.

"It took a long time for us to reach where we are, but with God's help, we made it," said 70-year- member Siddie Cooper.

During the storm more than three feet of water destroyed everything in the sanctuary except for the piano and two Bibles. General contractor Hank Williams and his wife say once they saw the damage  they had to help.

"We saw the devastation that had been done to their church, [and]we know that they were not going to be able to get back in their church at that time, and we decided that we would reach out and try to help them in every way we could  to help them get back in their church," said Hank Williams.

The Williams', members, and several organizations collected more than $60,000 in donations. Williams says the donations came from as far as California.

"It was all worth it, every bit of it. I'd like to thank everybody that helped these people get back to their home," said Betty Williams.

On Sunday, the Pamlico County church held it's first service since the storm. Several pastors, visitors, and friends of the church packed the newly renovated church. Longtime members say they are just happy to be back.

"I looked in it and saw how beautiful it was, after I seen what the hurricane had done to it. It's amazing! It's amazing and I got this joy in my heart," said member Cody Urshy.

Although, the congregation can now hold regular services, there are still some repairs that the church still needs. To help with those repairs, the Caring and Sharing Committee is holding a concert and skit on Mar. 22nd. The event will be held  at the Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Newport, N.C., at 4p.m.
