No charges to be filed in shooting death of Derek Walker

DURHAM, N.C. -

The Durham District Attorney's office said Wednesday that nocharges will be filed in the shooting death of Derek Walker.

On the late afternoon of Sept. 17, 2013, Durham policeofficers were dispatched to a possible suicide threat at 201 Foster St. indowntown Durham.

When officer arrived to the scene, they found 26-year-old DerekWalker armed with what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol near the bullstatue in downtown Durham.

Durham Police negotiated with him for about an hour when he pointed the gunat officers, which prompted an officer to fire at him. An autopsy report showedthat the officer shot Walker in the left chest. Walker died shortly after beingtransported to Duke Hospital.

The officer who shot Walker was placed on administrative leave beforereturning in January 2014.

In a release Wednesday, District Attorney A. Leon said he reviewed 38eyewitness interviews, 911 calls and medical examiners notes and found "noprobable cause to charge a crime in this matter."

The DA's office also reviewed crime scene photos, interviews with people whoknew Walker and Walker's Facebook postings.
