ACC live blog: Deacons beat Notre Dame, 81-69

Posted: Updated:

Here's a live update from the Greensboro Coliseum as the ACC Tournament unfolds.

MIAMI ADVANCES: Miami won the ACC Tournament last year, and survived for at least a day. On Wednesday, the Hurricanes knocked out hapless Virginia Tech, 57-53, in a first-round game matching two teams that have seen better days.

Guard Rion Brown led Miami with 15 points, as the Hurricanes won despite making only 38.6 percent of their shots.

CLOSE GAME: Virginia Tech and Miami are locked in a close game in the second game of the ACC Tournament Wednesday. Tech has a 32-31 halftime lead on the Hurricanes, who actually won the tournament a year ago in Greensboro.

Of course, that was a much different Miami team than the current 16-15 squad. Shane Larkins, now with the Dallas Mavericks, was running the point then.

Virginia Tech hasn't had much to shout about after firing coach Seth Greenberg in 2012 after nine seasons. Greenberg always made the Hokies competitive in ACC play - although the NCAA tournament committee usually looked at the Hokies and yawned.

Either way, that's not an issue this year. Tech won only nine games, two in conference play, coming into the tournament. Tech is 22-40 overall and 6-30 in the ACC in the two seasons since Greenberg was canned.

WAKE FOREST WINS: Wake Forest has beaten Notre Dame, 81-69, in the first game of the ACC Tournament.

A major win for the Deacons - guard Coron Williams led the way with 25 points and only missed one of his eight shots.

WAKE STILL UP: Those at the game Wednesday afternoon at the spacious Greensboro Coliseum are seeing a strong performance by Wake Forest.

The Deacons lead Notre Dame 53-43 and Wake is playing tough in the second half. Notre Dame is still hurt by the academic absence of Jerian Grant, who is watching from the sidelines and is expected to be back next season.

Grant had averaged 19 points per game before being sidelined.

DEACS UP AT HALF: Is Randolph Childress back and playing for Wake Forest again?

Uh, no. But the Deacons do have senior guard Coron Williams, and Williams is putting on a torrid display at the Greensboro Coliseum Wednesday afternoon.

Williams has hit all four of his shots, including three 3-pointers, as Wake Forest had a 37-29 lead over Notre Dame at the end of the first half.

The Irish have made only 10 of their first 26 shots for a miserable 38 percent from the field.

Of course, this is Notre Dame's first appearance in the ACC Tournament.

Notre Dame, by the way, is wearing some odd uniforms. The Irish are wearing blue with what is almost lime green uniform numbers and trim.

YUM! WNCN's Jeff Reeves at the ACC Tournament shooting still images for our slideshow, and we'll have a blizzard of images for you throughout the tournament.ACC cupcakes

But the tournament isn't all about the games, of course. The food can be pretty appealing as well, as Reeves discovered with ACC cupcakes.

Hey, better try the Maryland one - last year for that.

And next year, we assume, you'll be able to snack on a Louisville Cardinals cupcake.
