Eastern Elementary teacher is Pitt County Teacher of the Year

Posted: Updated:
Wednesday afternoon Pitt County Schools named their teacher of the year in a ceremony at Rock Springs Center.

The event recognized every school’s ‘teacher of the year’ and recognized school support staff members who won awards for their service.

The top award went to third grade teacher Jami Dickerson of Eastern Elementary School.

Pitt County Schools profiled the teacher saying:

Jami Dickerson is in her fifth year of teaching and her third as a third grade teacher at Eastern Elementary School. She holds a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University, and she has participated and presented at numerous trainings and workshops during her professional career. Dickerson says she believes that educating the mind and the heart of a child requires teachers to fundamentally believe that all children can learn, that children learn through strong, positive relationships, and children learn and build these relationships in a nurturing environment. She is passionate about creating an environment where respect is modeled and everyone gets the same amount of love and attention.

“I want beginning teachers to know they can do it. You know sometimes it is scary right when you first graduate and go into a classroom, but you can succeed and you can succeed quickly” said Dickerson shortly after receiving the honor.

Dickerson also received numerous gifts and monetary awards from more than a dozen local merchants and businesses, including a car to drive during her year as ‘Teacher of the Year.”
