The buzz in Greensboro now is about the future of the ACC Tournament, with Sports Illustrated reporting the tournament is expected to move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center in 2017.
The tournament will be in Greensboro in 2015 and Washington in 2016.
But no dates have been announced beyond that, and it's clear the ACC has been holding off to try to work out a chance to get to New York. While a move to New York is a major change from the tournament's Southern roots, it's also a play to solidify the fan bases from Syracuse, Pitt and Notre Dame, the new additions to the league.
And, of course, many ACC schools, particularly Duke, have large fan bases in the New York area.
A top ACC official told WNCN in October that the ACC would only go to the Barclays Center or Madison Square Garden. But Sports Illustrated reported that the Garden is under contract to the Big East through 2026, and the diminished Big East has no desire to give up its time at the Garden.
That leaves the ACC looking at the Barclays Center in revitalized Brooklyn, just across the river from Manhattan. And the fact that this could happen as soon as 2017 is a strong indication of just how much the ACC wants to be in New York.
