RALEIGH, N.C. -

Middle and high school students across the state took their shot at an extreme engineering project Friday morning.

To succeed in the annual North Carolina Department of Transportation Model Bridge Building Competition, it takes a combination of science, math and skill.

Students were judged on oral presentation, design drawings, written report and the load carried.

The event, held at the NCDOT Transportation Building, is designed to create a greater awareness of careers in transportation, construction, engineering and other services provided by the NCDOT. It's also a method to help students make the connection between what is taught in the classroom and how science and math lessons translate into future careers.

In the end, students from Franklin Academy High and Exploris Middle won the competition.

Winners from the four regions statewide will advance to the final competition on April 11.
