NC State practiced cutting nets before ACC Tournament

Posted: Updated:

N.C. State is so determined to win the ACC Tournament thisweekend that Coach Mark Gottfried had the team practice cutting the netsWednesday at practice, Wolfpack guard Cat Barber told WNCN.

N.C. State upset Syracuse 66-63 Friday night in the ACCsemifinals.

Barber said the team showed up for practice in Raleigh onWednesday, the last day before the tournament, expecting a full practice.

Instead, Gottfried had the team shoot free throws, and thenpulled out ladders so the players could practice cutting the nets.

College basketball teams traditionally cut the nets afterwinning major titles. The tradition actually began at N.C. State with legendarycoach Everett Case, whose last season was 1965.

"We thought we were going to practice," Barber said. "But itwas like, ‘Hey, Coach really wants to win this, and so do we.'"

N.C. State has not won the ACC Tournament since 1987 andneeds a strong run in Greensboro to have a chance to continue in NCAA play.

But N.C. State is in the semifinals for the third straighttime under Gottfried, and the Pack is making no secret of its desire to bechampions.

"We're not done," Gottfried told the media Friday night. "Wedidn't come here to just beat Syracuse."

Gottfried said State is determined to reach Sunday'schampionship – and to prevail.

"We talked about playing on Sunday, and winning on Sunday,"Gottfried said.

But he didn't tell the media about what he did in practiceWednesday, a motivational ploy that has worked beautifully so far inGreensboro.
