5-year-old injured after Opelika hit and run was leaving ice cream truck

OPELIKA, Ala. - A 5-year-old girl who was hospitalized after a hit-and-run in Opelika Tuesday was walking away from an ice cream truck, Opelika Police Department Captain Bruce DeLong says.

The girl, who has now been identified as Arianna Monique Thomas, of Opelika, is in satisfactory condition at Columbus Regional Hospital, according to DeLong. She was flown by helicopter to the hospital after suffering injuries to her head..

Police say Chandra Marie Carlisle, 33, initially stopped and exit her vehicle after hitting the girl along Fruitwood Circle. She then got back in her car and drove off, according to DeLong. Carlisle turned herself in to police a short time later. She is being charged with Assault First Degree and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death or Personal Injury.

The incident remains under investigation.
