1 dead in wrong-way driver collision on Durham Freeway

DURHAM, N.C. - A head-on collision near exit 16 of the Durham Freeway Tuesday night left one dead and two hospitalized.

Police the said the accident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. when John Michael Williams, 59, of Durham, was traveling southbound in northbound lanes.

Williams collided head-on with a Jeep traveling northbound driven by Jimmy Allen, 25, of Hillsborough, police said.

Durham authorities said Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

Allen and his brother, 30-year-old Walter Allen, remain hospitalized with serious injuries, police said.

Michael Carter, 28, of Durham, was traveling in the backseat of Allen’s Jeep, according to police. He was treated and released from the hospital.

Durham police are still investigating the incident.
