One dead after Columbus State shooting

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - One person has died after a shooting at Columbus State University Sunday afternoon.

At 2:35 p.m., Columbus State Police dispatchers received a call about a man with a gun near "Courtyard I" student apartments on campus, according to a university news release. Within minutes, officers located the individual.

"After a brief foot chase, the suspect turned to face officers, and shots were fired," the news release says.

On Twitter, the university described the moment as: "The man ran but turned threateningly."

20-year-old Zikarious Flint, who was not a student at CSU, was taken to The Medical Center at 3:15 p.m. He later succumbed to his injuries.

"This is a terrible tragedy," CSU President Tim Mescon says in the release. "We will cooperate fully with the investigation by the GBI. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this, as well as their families."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating the incident because it is an officer-involved shooting. They often investigate police officer-involved incidents with the hope of avoiding any conflict of interest.

No one else was injured in the shooting.
