DURHAM, N.C. -

North Carolina's Libertarian Party will have an unusual gathering this weekend because it will host a forum for its primary candidates for U.S. Senate.

Several dozen people are expected to attend the party's annual state convention getting underway Friday at a Durham hotel. The forum featuring nomination hopefuls Tim D'Annunzio of Raeford and Sean Haugh of Durham is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The state Libertarian Party hasn't had many primaries because it usually only fields one candidate or hasn't been an official state party.

The May 6 primary winner will run in the November general election against the Republican primary winner and probably the Democratic incumbent, Kay Hagan.

Haugh ran for U.S. Senate in 2002. D'Annunzio ran for Congress in 2010 and 2012 as a Republican but switched his affiliation.
