CLINTON, N.C. -

Nearly 50 animals were rescued Wednesday during a hoarding investigation in Sampson County.

SAFE Haven for Cats said 44 cats and five dogs were rescued from a home on East Powell Street in Clinton.

“Even though these people did a lot of good, things just got out of control,” said Pam Miller, executive director of SAFE Haven for Cats.

SAFE Haven said it assisted the Humane Society of the United States, the Clinton Police Department and the Sampson County Animal Shelter during the rescue.

A total of 11 cats were taken to the SAFE Haven shelter where they are being referred to as the “Liberated 11.”

“We feel very happy to have the 'Liberated 11.' We have made a promise to these wonderful cats, never to break their trust again. Our goal for each of them is a life full of great care, health, love, and a permanent home,” Miller said.

One cat had to be euthanized shortly after being found at the residence, authorities said.

Medical treatment for the cats could total up to $5,000, authorities said.

Charges are pending against the resident of the home where the animals were found, authorities said.
