Posted: Updated:

A 9-year-old girl is missing and believed drowned in Mississippi after flash flood waters roared through the area.

Rescue teams from various areas are searching for her, and Yazoo County EMA Director told News Channel 12 that crews were searching culverts for any sign of the girl.

The EMA Director said the girl was playing in the backyard when she was swept under. She went missing around 8 p.m. Sunday and shortly after someone reported seeing a body in the canal behind the child's house on 8th street and Lee avenue.

A dive crew from Yazoo County searched the drainage ditches on 8th Street, Lee Avenue, 7th Street, and Martin Luther King Drive.

Yazoo County Director of Emergency Management Joey Ward said, "The rescue phase is now over. We will head into recovery phase in the morning."

The girl was last seen wearing a pink dress and red tennis shoes.
