Fox tests positive for rabies in Cumberland County

Posted: Updated:

A fourth case of rabies has been confirmed in Cumberland County.

The State Public Health Lab in Raleigh reported positive results for rabies in a fox picked up on Wednesday, April 9 from Lake Upchurch Road in Parkton.

Animal control says a man reported that he was outside with his two dogs when a fox approached and attacked the dogs.

According to officials, the dogs have not been vaccinated against rabies and must be quarantined for six months according to state statute.

This is the fourth rabies case in the county for 2014.

In March, a rabid raccoon killed by stray dogs in the Cedar Creek area tested positive for rabies. The stray dogs involved in that incident have since been impounded and euthanized.
