Rock'n'Roll Marathon exhibits open in Raleigh; expect road closures Sunday

RALEIGH, N.C. - Thousands of people swarmed to the Raleigh Convention Center Friday as the Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh Marathon and Half Marathon kicked off the weekend with a health expo.

The health expo features more than 100 exhibits and running and healthy lifestyles and continues through 7 p.m. Friday. Saturday, the health expo is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

More than 12,500 runners are expected on the streets of Raleigh Sunday morning for the race, which begins at 7 a.m. The race begins on South Salisbury Street, between Davie and Cabarrus, and ends on Fayetteville Street.

This is the first year the marathon has been held in Raleigh, and the race is a raucous event featuring 29 bands along the route. Registration is closed.

The race will close roads across the Capital City, as it loops past Shaw University, out to Oakwood, down Peace Street to Cameron Village and then cuts through N.C. State and heads back downtown.

But the race, held on the morning of Palm Sunday, could create problems for Raleigh’s downtown churches. Organizers have posted routes to the downtown churches on their website.

Proceeds go to the Jimmy V Foundation to help fund cancer research.
