COLUMBUS, Ga. - Darrin Adams has escaped from prison officials for the second time in four months.

The Muscogee County Prison inmate disappeared from work detail at the Woodruff Farms Soccer Complex around 2p et Friday. He disappeared when his supervisor went to the restroom, Muscogee County Prison Warden Dwight Hamrick told WRBL News 3. When the supervisor returned, his golf cart was and Adams were both missing.

As a work trustee, Adams was only required to check in with his supervisor once an hour, Hamrick said. When questioned by WRBL News 3, the warden said he was unaware Adams had escaped from the Lee County Detention Center just last December. Hamrick said if he had known about the previous escape, Adams probably would have had more supervision. Further investigation revealed Adams also escaped a Georgia prison in 1994 making his disappearance Friday from detention officials his third.

In December, Adams was arrested by the Opelika Police Department for providing false information to an police officer. He was also wanted on a 1997 warrant for Theft of Property. While awaiting booking, Adams walked out a rear door while jail officials tended to another inmate.

Hamrick describes Adams, 40, of Phenix City, as a "small-time criminal" with a number of nonviolent charges over the years. He was serving three years for meth possession at the time of his most recent escape.

In September, WRBL News 3 media partner The Ledger-Enquirer reported Adams allegedly refused to pay his bill at Spicoli's Bar & Grill. He was charged with possession of methamphetamine after he was found to being carrying an undisclosed amount of meth.

Columbus law enforcement are searching for Adams, who authorities believe may have been picked up in a car because heart and back problems make it difficult for him to walk long distances. He is described as a white man, about 5 feet 7inches tall weighing 175 pounds. He brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone who sees Adams is asked to call 911.

Hamrick said Adams' aunt and girlfriend's mother both live near the soccer complex but claim they have not seen or spoken to Adams. Lee County authorities have contacted his girlfriend, who lives in Alabama, but she too claims not to know where Adams is.

In 2012, WRBL News 3 showcased Muscogee County prison details. In that report, Hamrick said roughly two thirds of their prisoners are assigned to a work detail.

At that time, Hamrick said inmates on work details have a Georgia certified peace officer assigned to their crew. Minimum-security inmates are checked hourly while medium-security prisoners require constant correctional officer supervision. That officer is also required to carry a weapon and must stay within 15 feet of prisoners. New prisoners all require supervise by an armed officer regardless of their security level, Hamrick said. The probationary period for new prisoners lasts at least thirty days while officers learn their habits.

For that report, News 3 researched inmates who had escaped from work detail from 2007 to 2012:
>June 2007: Jeremiah Webb walked off a work detail
>December 2007: Mike Weaver walked away from a work detail at Flat Rock Park.
>June 2008: Herman Freeman and Gregory Walker drove away from a work detail at Lake Oliver Marina.
>November 2008: John Hubert took off in a city van from a work detail at the government center
>November 2010: Randall Sheppard walked off a work detail in Columbus.

All of these inmates were eventually captured.

Hamrick said prison work details saved the city an estimated $15 million in 2011.
