LAS VEGAS - Tension between the federal government and a Nevada rancher has reached new highs after protesters and federal agents clashed.

Rancher Cliven Bundy claims to have a historic right to allow his cattle to graze on public land near Bunkerville. That public land is the arid habitat for the endangered desert tortoise, according to the Associated Press.

The Bureau of Land Management says the rancher owes more than $1 million in grazing fees for allowing his cattle to graze on public land.

The BLM has started rounding up cattle from Bundy’s herd to remove them from the public land.

The dispute between Bundy and the BLM dates back to 1993.

A video posted on YouTube shows a clash between federal agents and protesters near the ranch earlier this week.

Protesters attempted to stop federal agents from accessing the land where Bundy’s cattle were grazing.

The video shows federal agents with Tasers and K-9 units clashing with protesters.

The incident in the YouTube video is under investigation.

BLM says its agents were carrying out District 2 court orders from two different judges. Those two judges say Bundy’s cattle are trespassing.
