Hillsborough offers tour of Confederate gravesites

Posted: Updated:
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. - Visitors to Hillsborough can take part in "Ghosts of the Confederacy," an hour-long guided tour of the Confederate dead buried at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church cemetery.
The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough is hosting the event in honor of the 150th commemoration of the Civil War. The graves include that of a general's son killed on the first day in the Cavalry; the sons of a tailor and a governor who entered the war together with only one surviving the bloodiest day of battle in U.S. history; and a rector who was too grief-stricken to officiate at his son's funeral in the last days of the war.
The tour coincides with the 149th anniversary of the surrender at Bennett farm. That event will be commemorated April 26-27 in nearby Durham.
