Residents say Henrico neighborhood not prone to shootings

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Crime scene tape serves as a stark reminder of what happened early Saturday morning--the image of a typically quiet community now shattered by gun fire.

"This is a very safe community," Sujatha Selvin said.

Sujatha Selvin lives in the apartment complex in Henrico with her husband and two young daughters. The couple was surprised to hear about the shooting especially since the family has not heard of any major crime incidents happening in the area in the last five years.

"We have been living in the this community now since 2009 onward and we haven't seen any kind of thing actually this is the first thing," Sam Reman said.

Police say that an altercation between the victim and two others happened hours before the shooting.

The argument would later become physical. Officers say the man walked out of home around one Saturday morning and a fight began with several people.

When that fight ended the victim walked back towards his home--- and that is when police say the man was shot in the buttocks.

"I was shocked, I was wondering what was happening because I really couldn't relate it to this community," Sujatha Selvin said.

The victim was taken to VCU Medical Center and treated for non life threatening injuries. Sujatha who once let her young girls play outside without worry said she plans on keeping them closer now because their home does not appear safe, as it once was.

"I definitely want some reassurance especially living with two kids,' Selvin said.

Henrico Police are continuing to investigate this shooting. They say that it is believed that the victim and suspects may have known one another.
