NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to a 9-5 Conference USA series win over East Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex. With the win the Monarchs improve to 22-14 overall and 10-7 in the league, while the Pirates drop to 20-15 and 8-6.

ODU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning thanks to five hits and never looked back. Nick Walker doubled to start the frame and moved to third on Ben Slaton’s infield single before scoring on P.J. Higgins’ fielder’s choice, where Kirk Morgan over threw Charlie Yorgen covering second on a potential double play. Josiah Burney and Jordan Negrini followed with consecutive RBI singles scoring Slaton and Higgins. The Monarchs final run came when Burney crossed home when Connor Meyers grounded into a double play.

Ryan Yarbrough (4-4) picked up the win allowing a pair of runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in six full innings of work. Relievers Dean Ali (2.0 IP, 2 Rs) and Conner Overton (1.0 IP, R) closed out the final three frames giving up three runs on three hits.

Reid Love (2-3) took the loss surrendering four runs (two earned) on five hits without recording a single out. Tyler Bolton made his first relief appearance of the season tossing 5.2 innings where he allowed a run on four hits with five punch-outs. Davis Kirkpatrick (0.1 IP, 2 Rs), Drew Reynolds (1.0 IP, 2 Rs) and Hayden White (1.0 IP, 2 Hs) each saw action from the Pirates bullpen.

The Monarchs extended their lead to 5-0 in the third on Meyers’ RBI single. Burney sent a Bolton pitch back up the middle with one out before moving to second on Negrini’s base hit to left. Meyer’s second RBI of the contest came with a shot through the right side pushing across Burney.

ECU finally got on the board in the seventh pulling within two, 5-3. Bryce Harman, Yorgen and Garrett Brooks recorded three-straight singles setting up Morgan’s bases loaded walk that plated Harman. Dylan Brown, who had three hits on the day, followed with a ground out which scored Yorgen.

But in the bottom half of the frame, ODU plated four runs on two hits and a pair of hit batters making it a 9-2 game.

The Pirates scored two runs in the eighth on a pair of RBI groundouts by Yorgen and Brooks, and one in the ninth on Ian Townsend’s sac fly to left capping the game at 9-5.

ODU out hit ECU 13-11 on the day with four Monarchs collecting multiple hits and were led by Negrini’s 4-for-4 effort. Brown and Harman combined for six of the Pirates 11 base knocks – each posting three-hits.
