RDU opens renovated Terminal 1

Posted: Updated:

After nearly two years and $68 million, a new and more modern Terminal 1 is now open at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Travelers began using the renovated terminal Sunday morning with the first departing flight going out at 6 a.m. Sunday.

Passengers will notice more natural light and open spaces when going through Terminal 1.

Crews moved columns and walls to give the terminal, which was originally designed as a hangar, a more open feel.

“This is wonderful. It’s wide open. It’s airy. It’s much like the expected terminal that it should be compared to the other Terminal 2. This is a great addition," said Joe Lara, who lives in Apex.

And for traveling convenience, Terminal 1 now has power outlets at gates, plus 11 shops and restaurants.

“It’s beautiful. It’s beautiful. Went shopping. Got me some clothes. They got a nice clothes store there. It’s really nice," said Scarlette Bennett of Rocky Mount.

The modernized space was supposed to open in March, but was delayed because of the cold weather which impacted construction of the aircraft parking area.

One change travelers won’t see is the large explosive detection machines behind the scenes. They were incorporated into a new bag handling system.

Terminal 1 is the home to Southwest Airlines and AirTran.
