NC legislators talk teacher pay as session nears

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

There's only a month to go before the North Carolina legislature reconvenes in Raleigh and more ideas are floating around to improve public school pay beyond just the youngest teachers.

A legislative committee looking at teacher effectiveness and compensation planned Monday to finalize its final report to the full General Assembly. The committee has taken testimony from local school district leaders using incentives to attract teachers in hard-to-staff schools and subjects. It's also been looking at how to reward performance and retain skilled teachers.

Gov. Pat McCrory and legislative leaders already have committed to a plan to raise the salary floor to $35,000 by fall 2015.

Some university students scheduled a rally before the meeting at the Legislative Building to support base pay raises and making broader salary schedule improvements.
