Pinehurst No. 2 shows off new look, readies for Open

PINEHURST, N.C. -

Now that the Masters is over, the next major golf tournament ahead is the U.S. Open, and officials in Pinehurst are eager to show off the renovated Pinehurst No. 2.

While the Masters is known for its green, lush course, Pinehurst No. 2 will have a different look than it did back in 2006.

“As beautiful as Augusta National is with all its green, this will be the antithesis of that,” said Bob Farren, Pinehurst director of grounds and golf maintenance. “But it will be a great test.”

Hard pan and wire grass is now a Pinehurst staple. The best male players in the world will take on the court beginning June 9, and the Women’s Open is the next week.

The course underwent an extensive renovation to restore it to restore its historic nature. The $2.5 million project included widening fairways, removing all rough, planting more than 200,000 wiregrass plants and increasing the length by 300 yards.

Some holes have changed dramatically, while others are somewhat the same.
