Fundraiser held for Beaufort Co. tornado victims

BELHAVEN, N.C. - As some people try to recover from the damage of an EF-2 tornado that hit on April 7th, the Belhaven community is coming together to raise money for the victims.

Organizers say they raised nearly $25,000 at a fundraiser Saturday, which some say doesn't surprise them.

"We become one. That's what this is all about," said Don Cox, one of the organizers. "It's not about black or white, it's about people."

The fundraiser included barbeque, live music, and a live auction.

Dempsy Ange is one of the tornado victims who attended the fundraiser. He said the support his family has gotten has been amazing.

"This is just the way the neighborhood is. This is the way the community is. This is the way the area is," Ange said.

Ange's house sustained more than $50,000 worth of damage. That's one of the reasons why more than one thousand people showed up to open their hearts and wallets for the victims.

"It's just the kind of outpouring that I wish the whole country and the whole world had," said Cox.

Organizers say more fundraisers will be needed to help the victims. But Ange says the help he's already received is priceless.

"They dropped everything they were doing. Some of them had big businesses that they needed to run, and they were at my house for 3 and half days with their equipment," Ange said. "You can't put a price on that kind of stuff."

If you would like to donate to the tornado victims, you can send cash or check to the Belhaven-Pantego Rotary Club Foundation at P.O. Box 399, Belhaven, NC 27810. Be sure to note somewhere on the donation that it is for tornado victims.
