Marine, child's mother arrested on child abuse charges

Posted: Updated:
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - A Cherry Point Marine and the mother of his child are both facing charges after police say they left a 2-year-old alone in a Morehead City apartment.

Morehead City Police say they received a call of a screaming child at Crystal Coast Apartments around 8:20 Thursday night.

When officers arrived they found the front door of the apartment partially open with a small child standing behind it. Police say the child was wearing only a dirty diaper and crying. All the lights were off in the apartment at the time.

Police say it appears the child was left in the house unattended for about 5 hours.

The mother of the child, 21-year-old Amber Marie Butler, told police she left the child with a babysitter. Police have yet to verify that story. Butler also told police she was at work at a Family Dollar store in Beaufort but that was not true. She was arrested for felony child abuse and placed on a $15,000 secure bond.

Police also arrested the toddler’s father, 21-year-old Broderick Kincaid, a United States Marine stationed at MCAS Cherry Point. Police say Kincaid left the child unattended around 4pm Thursday, with intentions that the child’s mother was on her way home. Kincaid was charged with felony child abuse and placed on a $15,000 secure bond.

Police say the child was picked up by DSS.
