North Carolina Zoo gets environmental distinction

Posted: Updated:
ASHEBORO, N.C. - The North Carolina Zoo, in Asheboro, NC, got a big honor for its environmental efforts.

This week the zoo was recognized as an Environmental Steward by an advisory board appointed by the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.  The honor is for organizations that demonstrate superior performance beyond what is required.

“Attaining Steward status is a culmination of the tireless efforts of the entire zoo staff towards operating in a more environmental sustainable manner and being an example to all. Our mission is to connect people to wildlife and wild places and being a Steward demonstrates our commitment to the environment,” said Mary Joan Pugh, the zoo’s deputy director.

DENR said the North Carolina Zoo is the first state agency to earn the Environmental Steward distinction.
