Lucroy fans 11 In ECU’s series clinching win over FAU, 2-1

Posted: Updated:
Miami, FL - David Lucroy struck out a season-high 11 batters, while Eric Tyler scored the game winning run on a wild pitch as East Carolina (27-18, 13-8) claimed the Conference USA weekend series over Florida Atlantic (22-21, 10-14) Sunday afternoon, 2-1.

Tyler darted home on a Bo Logan wild pitch in the top of the fifth giving ECU a 2-1 lead, which proved to the game-winner. The freshman catcher was hit by a pitch to start the frame, took second on a Hunter Allen sac bunt before moving to third on Charlie Yorgen’s single down the left field line.

David Lucroy (2-4) allowed one run (earned) on one hit with five walks and a season-high 11 strikeouts. The right-hander, who struggled in the opening frame, closed out the contest fanning seven of the final 10 batters he faced before passing the ball to Ryan Williams. The senior appeared in his 26th contest tossing two scoreless frames and picked up his team-leading seventh save – second of the weekend.

Drew Jackson (5-2) worked 4.1 innings allowing a pair of runs (both earned) on six hits with a walk and one strikeout. Bo Logan entered the game in the fifth with a runner on second and finished his outing tossing 3.2 scoreless frames surrendering a pair of hits and striking out three. Kevin Alexander worked a perfect ninth getting three fly ball outs.

For the third-straight game of the series, ECU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Allen scored from second on Zach Houchins RBI single. Allen singled through the left side with one out and moved to third on Drew Reynolds walk. Houchins delivered his 19th RBI of the season sending a shot to left field where Allen crossed home.

FAU knotted the game at one-all in the bottom of the fourth on CJ Chatham’s RBI single to left field. Tyler Rocklien walked with one out, stole second and moved to third on Robert Buckley’s fly out to right center. Chatham recorded the Owls first hit of the game singling home Rocklein with a shot to left field.

FAU squandered an opportunity in the bottom of the first to plate the game’s first run on an unconventional inning-ending double play. After Stephen Kerr and Ricky Santiago drew consecutive walks from Lucroy, Brandon Sanger sent a deep fly ball to right pushing Kerr over to third. Tyler Rocklein stepped to the plate sending a fly ball to left field seeming deep enough to score Kerr, but Dylan Brown’s throw was on the line to the plate and even though Kerr was safe at the plate, Eric Tyler ran down to third motioning that Kerr left early and the umpires agreed for a double play.

The Pirates will be back in action on April 29 when they travel to instate rival North Carolina for a midweek clash at Boshamer Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. (ET).
