HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. -

Sammie Burnett is mourning the loss of his 11-year-old pit bull-terrier mix. The dog was shot and killed while tethered in the backyard over the weekend.

"I came out and hollered at him a couple of times,” says Burnett, “he didn't move."

Burnett lives on Josiah Lane in Henderson County. The back of his property is lined by woods, where people sometimes go for target practice.

On Friday, Burnett heard several gunshots. He didn’t think much about it at the time because it’s a routine occurrence.

It’s not against the law to discharge a firearm in the county, but there are rules.

“The projectile cannot leave the property from where you are shooting from,” according to Chief Deputy Frank Stout with the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators are currently looking into the case. They believe it may have been intentional, and if so, felony charges will be filed.

“To hit a dog in the chest like that is not an accident,” Burnett said.

The sheriff's office is asking for the public's help. If anyone heard gunshots being fired near Josiah Lane, you are asked to call 828-697-4911.
