Orange Co. reports 10th rabies case of 2014

Posted: Updated:
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

Orange County reported its 10th case of rabies for the year after a raccoon tested positive for the disease.

A Hillsborough resident said she saw a raccoon near her home April 26 that appeared to be sick, Orange County Animal Services said. The woman called authorities after moving her dogs to a safe location, authorities said.

Animal services responded to the call and removed the animal.

The dogs that were near the sick raccoon were vaccinated against rabies but state law requires a vaccinated animal to receive a booster shot with in five days of being possibly exposed to rabies, authorities said.

Animals that are not vaccination against rabies must be destroyed or quarantined for six months, Orange County Animal Services said.

“Ensuring cats, dogs and ferrets are current on their rabies vaccinations is one of the most important responsibilities of a pet owner,” said Bob Marotto, director of Animal Services. “It is critical that we assure that our cats and dogs are currently vaccinated throughout their lives, since it can quite literally be the difference between life and death for a pet and protect the public from rabies.”

A low-cost rabies vaccination clinic will be held at the Public Market House/Farmer’s Market in Hillsborough May 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Vaccinations are $10, cash only. Vaccination clinic dates for the rest of the year can be found here.
