North Port girl runs over grandmother in driveway

Posted: Updated:
NORTH PORT, FL (WFLA) -

Police say a 13-year-old girl ran over her grandmother, who later died of her injuries.

It happened Wednesday evening at 4413 McKibben Drive. Investigators say Judith Jellema, 68, had parked the van in a “crooked manner” outside the home. She told her 13-year-old granddaughter to back up the van and straighten it out while Jellema stood near the open driver’s side door.

Police say as the van backed up, the door hit Jellema, knocking her down. The girl tried to stop the van and hit the accelerator, causing the van to roll over her grandmother.

Jellema was taken to Blake Memorial Hospital, where she died of her injuries.  Her granddaughter sustained minor injuries.

A police report indicates "Charges Pending" in this case.
