Fayetteville shooting victim was facing charges in previous murder

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The man who was shot and killed early Thursday morning at the Cambridge Arms apartments was a suspect in a double murder case. Jacoy Nathan Mahorn, 29, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in relation to a shooting outside the Mickey’s nightclub last fall.

Police say officers found Mahorn and Shaniqua Shanae Simmons, 19, dead inside an apartment at Cambridge arms around 4:55 a.m.  Someone called police to report suspicious activity after a passerby observed the rear glass door to the apartments shattered.

Mahorn was also facing two counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property and four counts of attempted first-degree murder in relation to the shooting at Mickey’s. 26-year-old Cornelius Tobias Jackson and 24-year-old Melissa Yamile Neal were shot and killed on Halloween night at the nightclub on Bragg Boulevard. Mahorn was scheduled to appear in court on those charges on Thursday.

Fayetteville Police Chief Harold Medlock said investigators would look into the possibility that Mahorn's murder was retaliation for the murders outside Mickey's. He said there was no early indication that the two shootings were related.

Just last year the Fayetteville Police Department sued the Cambridge Arms management, which resulted in the installation of surveillance cameras at the complex as well as the addition of an overnight security guard and background checks for renters.

“Since May 2013, we have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and countless man hours on efforts to improve safety in the Cambridge Arms community,” said the complex’s management in a written statement.

The statement also said Mahorn’s name was not on the lease. Instead, his sister’s name was on the lease, and she had passed the background check, the statement said.

The management also said they did not believe Mahorn lived at the apartment, but Medlock said the police investigation indicated that he did.

Medlock said his department would put pressure on Cambridge Arms to make even more improvements. He wants to see more lighting and more of an effort from apartment management to be sure the applicants who pass the background checks are the actual tenants.

He also expressed frustration that an armed security guard did not notice the gunshots.

“We're going to continue to do the work that needs to be done to make that complex, that part of the city and this entire city safe and secure and folks feel good about living here,” Medlock said.

Anyone with information concerning the homicide investigation is asked to call detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department at (910) 433-1856 or Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477).
