RALEIGH, N.C. -

If you’ve ever wanted to own a helicopter that had been used by the state of North Carolina, now is your chance.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is selling its Sikorsky S-76 helicopter and will put the chopper on eBay. Proceeds will go to the North Carolina general fund.

The DOT decided to sell the helicopter because of the relatively low number of hours logged on a yearly basis and high cost of maintenance and operation, the DOT said.

The helicopter cost $265,000 to operate and maintain in fiscal year 2013, according to the state.

"This is one more example of how state government is operating more efficiently by taking a close look at resources and finding ways to cut costs," Gov. Pat McCrory said in a statement.

The helicopter was used by the NCDOT and other state agencies to survey disaster recovery efforts and facilitate economic development activities. But NCDOT also has two twin turbo-prop passenger aircraft and a Cessna Citation Bravo Jet in its fleet.

The department will work with a private helicopter provider to have access to a helicopter as needed.
