Trooper shot in Durham addresses families who lost loved ones

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Families of fallen officers from Durham County on Friday took time to remember those who died in the line of duty. Bringing comfort to the families was Mike Potts, a North Carolina Highway Patrolman who made a miraculous recovery from a shooting that nearly took his life.

Between 1913 and 2007, 11 officers from Durham County left their families to go to work and they never came home.

On Friday, Willie Hall came to remember his grandfather and great uncle, whose losses impacted generations.

“It’s hard to hold the tears back,” Hall said. “My grandfather—I never got to meet him. He was killed before I was born.”

Potts told the families, “My father was shot in the line of duty as well.. He was shot in 1975 -- he survived.”

Potts was shot five times in Feb. 18, 2013, on what he thought was a routine stop. He said the chance to speak to families of officers who fell was particularly meaningful to him.

“It’s very humbling to hear someone whose lost a loved one in the line of duty,” Potts said. “It’s important not to forget and honor them as often as we can for what they sacrificed.”

This was the 28th year of the ceremony.

“The loss will continue forever,” Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez said. “And it’s not just the loss, but the awareness of what these families have had to endure and continue to endure.”
