RALEIGH, N.C. -

Some folks in the Triangle gathered to recognize Holocaust Remembrance week., including a woman who knew Anne Frank when they were children.

In 2014, the week is acknowledged from April 27-May 4.

Sunday afternoon Meredith College hosted the 2014 State of North Carolina Holocaust Commemoration. Organizers said this week is a time to remember Holocaust victims and make sure it's a tragedy that isn't forgotten. The featured speaker was Barbara Ledermann Rodbell, a Holocaust survivor who lost all of her family during that time. She knew Anne Frank when they were growing up in Amsterdam. Frank died in a German concentration camp, but her diary, discovered after the war, became an international best-seller that detailed her family's strength and courage while hiding during the German occupation.

Rodbell said it's important that people remember the true meaning of the past.

"The more people talk about it the better," she said. "It is sliding into history and disappearing. People don't think about it. I hope the students carry what is learned here with them and it's amazing how interested they are and all the questions they ask."

Ledermann-Rodbell said she will continue travel to schools to speak about the Holocaust.
