TripAdvisor ranks Georgia No. 1 over North Carolina for barbecue

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

There is no question that North Carolinians take their barbecue seriously, including the long debate about whether the vinegar-based barbecue in Eastern North Carolina is better than the ketchup-base version in Western North Carolina.

But North Carolinians generally agree that the best barbecue in the country is right here in the Tar Heel State.

However, a new ranking by TripAdvisor disagrees. On Thursday, TripAdvisor released the top 10 U.S. states and highest-rated restaurants for barbecue.

TripAdvisor’s ranking of the top states was based on the average rating and total number of reviews for barbecue restaurants as well as the total number and percentage of restaurants in each state that are classified as barbecue restaurants.

And the top state in the country for barbecue was … Georgia.

Georgia?

Really?

North Carolina checked in at No. 2, but TripAdvisor didn’t have a single North Carolina barbecue restaurant in the Top 10.
