Environmental groups want coal ash out of Person Co. landfill

ROXBORO, N.C. - Duke Energy says it has now moved 253 tons of a mixture of coal ash and sediment into a Person County landfill, following a massive spill in the Dan River in February.

Now, environmental groups want it moved again.

Environmental experts with Duke Energy, the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Person County PRIDE (People Rising in Defense of Ecology) and The Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League made their case to county commissioners and Roxboro city councilors at a joint meeting on Thursday night.

Duke says it has already moved some coal ash to the Upper Piedmont Landfill near Rougemont.  Duke says the landfill is a safe place to put the ash because it is double-lined.

"So any water that did get through the first liner will be caught by the second one and treated," Duke Energy spokeswoman Amy Strecker said, "and additionally, landfills have monitoring wells around them that monitor the ground water."

"We've had a long experience at Blue Ridge of looking at landfills for over 20 years and the bottom line is that all landfills leak," Lou Zeller with the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League said.  "Something needs to be done, but to transfer the waste from one community and dump it on another community is just a bad idea."

Environmental groups, like Blue Ridge, want the ash moved to a secure location above ground.  No vote was taken on Thursday night.
