Many North Carolina schools have commencements the weekend of May 10-11. Here's a list of some of the key ones in central North Carolina. And graduates and families, be sure to share your photos with us at

N.C. State University

When: Saturday, 9 a.m.

PNC Arena

Speaker: David Ferriero, the archivist of the United States who oversees the operation of the National Archives and Records Administration. In that role, he’s responsible for overseeing the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.



University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

When: Sunday, 9:30 a.m.

Where: Kenan Stadium, rain or shine

Speaker: Dr. Atul Gawande, a surgeon and best-selling author




Duke University

When: 9:30 a.m.

Where: Wallace Wade Stadium

Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff




North Carolina Central

When: Saturday, 8 a.m.

Where: O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium

Speaker: Lezli Baskerville, president and CEO of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.



Shaw University

When: Saturday, 11 a.m.

Where: Dorton Arena, N.C. State Fairgrounds

Speaker: Madam Gloria Bongi Ngema-Zuma, first lady of South Africa. She was born in Durham. Her husband, Jacob Zuma, is president of South Africa.



Fayetteville State University

When: Saturday, May 10

Where: Crown Coliseum

Speaker: Donald Reaves, chancellor of Winston-Salem State University.
