50-year-old Charlotte time capsule opened, many items water damaged

Posted: Updated:

A time capsule buried in 1964 was opened at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Park Road Shopping Center in south Charlotte.
Officials with London Misher Public Relations said news reports from 1964 reported Charlotte's then-mayor, Stan Brookshire, included a letter with his predictions for the Queen City, pictures of Charlotteans, and some of their predictions about 2014 in the time capsule.

Charlotte's current mayor Dan Clodfelter opened the capsule and the first item he pulled out was old reel-to-reel tape.

Clodfelter then pulled out a key to the city from mayor Brookshire and an old newspaper.

Many of the items buried in the capsule were damaged by water.

Regal Park Terrace screened a series of vintage movies during the day.
