FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Some in Fayetteville got a special gift while celebrating Military Spouse Appreciation Day.

Crews with "Support Military Spouses" handed out shoe box gifts all afternoon. The boxes were filled with cards, jewelry, sewing kits and more.

Volunteers plan to give out 7,500 boxes this year.

Some military spouses said the gesture means a lot.

"It's nice that somebody actually cares enough to anything because we do go through a lot as military spouses," said Pamela Owens.

Tet Berzola's husband is currently serving overseas. "It's actually awesome because on Sunday it will be Mother's Day so it's another thing to look forward to," said Berzola.

Organizers with Support Military Spouses said these boxes are their way of thanking the wives and husbands for their sacrifice.

"Those spouses are amazing," said co-founder, Diane Rumley. "They absolutely are the heroes on the home front. We recognize their sacrifice. They aren't the forgotten heroes. There are so many people who come together through us."

Supporting Military Spouses will be giving out more boxes in Goldsboro on May 10. For more information visit http://supportmilitaryspouses.org/
