Man scares Pinellas Park bank staff with fake bomb, gets taken down by K9

PINELLAS PARK, FL (WFLA) -

A bank robber scared a block-full of people Friday evening, but it was a police K9 officer that had the last laugh.

Pinellas Park Police identified the suspected robber as Carmine J. Macedonio, 22, of New Port Richey. They believe he came into the Grow Financial Credit Union at 6900 Park Blvd, robbed it, put down a linen bag with a drawstring on the counter and then told the clerk there was a bomb in it.

The police K9 officer caught up with him a couple blocks away. The K9 Tank bit him multiple times, and sent him to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"It's rare that we see instances of bank robberies where a suspect will walk in, place a device on a counter identified as an explosive device and then leave us to deal with the aftermath,” said Sgt. Adam Geissenberger, of the Police Park Police Department.

What a stir it caused. Teams called in the Tampa bomb squad. Police evacuated local businesses to the left and right of the bank, including a Little Caesars next door.

“That guy scared a lot of people today,” one customer said as he pulled up expecting to buy a pizza but left when everything was still shut down for the night.

Tense moments were eased though when the device turned out to be just an alarm clock with television antenna taped to it, according to Geissenberger. Officers took it to a safe place in the parking lot and detonated it.

The robber initially got away with money, but police wouldn’t say how much. Investigators were able to recover most, if not all of it. The FBI has now gotten involved as well.
