PHENIX CITY, Ala. -

A north Phenix City neighborhood was hit hard by car thieves early Monday morning. Police say three cars were stolen and at least six more were broken into in the Summerfield subdivision.

The suspected thieves were seen on one of the homeowner's security cameras. The homeowner points out that there appears to be 5 men in the video. One of the men went up to his car and saw if his was unlocked. Once he realized it was locked, he continued down the street.

Denny Henderson wasn’t as lucky. He tells News 3 he went outside to go to work Monday morning and his truck was missing. He says he moved here three years ago with the impression that it was a safe neighborhood.

“It is safe,” said Henderson. “We're just going through a period that they're just getting more active.”

Residents say the owners had left their keys inside the cars that were stolen and most residents keep their cars unlocked because the area has been so safe.

“This is a big surprise to me,” said resident Larry Evans. “It's a concern, and it does show that maybe crime is moving north and moving into the upscale neighborhoods.”

Evans lives right across the street from Henderson and says the suspected thieves broke into his car, but he didn't have anything for them to take. Evans says he plans on putting up security cameras around his home because of the car thefts.

Residents say they've heard of similar crimes in surrounding neighborhoods. Henderson says there have been several cars stolen in subdivisions close to Summerfield.

One of the owners who had her car stolen told News 3 police located it in Columbus off Morris Road on Monday night. Police were unable to confirm any arrests, but if you recognize anyone in the video you can call Phenix City Police at 334-298-0611.
