SANFORD, N.C. -

Broughton High School was able to win their second state 4A title in three years after they carried a five shot lead into the final round of play at Carolina Trace County Club Tuesday.

The Caps enjoyed the view from atop the leader board after day one.

“We went back to Pinehurst and just relaxed and had had a good time,” said Broughton’s Stephen Saleeby. “(We) enjoyed the state tournament and enjoyed time off from school."

Broughton expected to get a challenge on day two from defending state champion Pinecrest but despite a solid 73 from Josh Martin, the Patriots could not catch up.

Hough High School’s Patrick Cover would take home the individual state title. Cover would work overtime to beat Millbrook’s Stephen Franken. Cover would sink a birdie on the first playoff hole to clinch the championship.

"That's probably the defining shot of my career so far. I liked that a lot, it was probably the most clutch shot of my life," Cover said.

But Broughton didn’t need any clutch shots as the Caps place three golfers in the top eight and cruises to an eight shot win over Pinecrest.

“It was incredible. We had a great time playing. It's a good course, it was a good team effort," said Broughton’s Will Minton.

Broughton brought home the title in 2012 but fell short of defending the title last year.

“They won as freshmen and then they came in a little apprehensive, not sure how to defend this, so they really wanted to win this. They did a great job," said Broughton Head Coach Anderson Marlowe.

The Caps are expected to be the favorite to repeat in 2015.
