RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala. - The Russell County Sheriff's Department has arrested a man who they are calling a "substantial meth dealer."

Royce Adam Oakes, 38, was arrested Monday after leading authorities on a chase through Phenix City. Once in custody, officials recovered 6 ounces of methamphetamine with a street value of $17,000.

"He has obviously been a substantial meth dealer in our community for some time," Sheriff Heath Taylor said during a Thursday afternoon news conference.

A warrant for Oakes' arrest was issued in March after officials intercepted a mailed package containing drugs being sent to Oakes. The mailed package contained 36 ounces of meth, worth about $100,800, said Taylor. At the time, Oakes was out on bond following November 2013 drug charges. He also had various drug possession charges stemming from April of 2010.

"Hopefully this will be enough to put Mr. Oakes away for a long time," said Taylor.  "And hopefully reduce the meth community substantially and make us a little bit safer."
