Charlotte Catholic ended Apex's reign Friday night, winning its fourth state lacrosse championship 11-8 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
Apex was looking to defend its 4-A state lacrosse title, but the Cougars lost a lot of firepower from last year's team, coming in to play against Charlotte Catholic as the underdog.
"I think we had been building and still hadn't played our best game of the year, and probably didn't get there tonight and you had to," said Apex head coach John Hayden.
Apex bolted out to the lead with four goals from junior Brendan Farrell, but Charlotte Catholic was too stout and sliced through the Apex defense all night long.
The two schools will meet again Saturday when the girls lacrosse teams play at 12:35 p.m.
